SpaceX confirmed that the Starship vehicle, the most powerful rocket ever constructed, encountered a “rapid unscheduled disassembly” shortly after lifting off from its launch site in Boca Chica, Texas. The company reported a loss of contact with the uncrewed rocket during ascent and acknowledged the failure in an official statement.
The spacecraft, which stands 123 meters (403 feet) tall, was designed to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean after a roughly one-hour mission. The Super Heavy booster, tasked with propelling the rocket during initial liftoff, successfully detached and returned to the launch site.
According to SpaceX, several of the rocket’s engines failed before the explosion occurred. While the precise cause is under investigation, the company emphasized that data from the flight would be analyzed to improve future performance and reliability.
Debris Fallout Prompts Aviation Disruptions
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued temporary flight delays at multiple airports in Florida, including Miami and Orlando, citing a “space launch incident” involving the Starship rocket. The delays were precautionary due to concerns about falling debris.
Visual evidence from residents across the Caribbean, including videos posted on social media platforms, showed fiery fragments falling from the sky. Local authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands confirmed they were working with SpaceX and U.S. officials to monitor and mitigate risks from potential debris impact.
The Bahamian government also received reports from citizens taking shelter amid warnings of falling material.
Recurring Setbacks in Starship Program
This marks the second major setback for SpaceX’s Starship program this year. A previous test conducted in January also resulted in a mid-flight explosion. The FAA had grounded further Starship launches pending a full investigation into that incident, which reportedly caused property damage in parts of the Caribbean.
Despite these events, Thursday’s launch proceeded before the completion of the FAA’s January investigation, according to U.S. media reports. SpaceX has not yet commented on this procedural deviation.
Dan Huot, a SpaceX commentator at the launch site, acknowledged the recurrence of issues. “Unfortunately this happened last time too, so we have some practice at this now,” he said during a live update.
Safety Protocols and Debris Containment
SpaceX stated that the debris from the explosion was expected to fall within a designated zone and that the vehicle did not contain hazardous materials. The company provided public contact information for individuals who may encounter remnants of the spacecraft.
Officials reiterated that the test was unmanned and no injuries or structural damage on the ground have been reported. However, aviation regulators and safety teams remain on high alert as a precautionary measure.
Implications for SpaceX and NASA Collaboration
The Starship program is a critical component of both SpaceX’s long-term space exploration goals and NASA’s Artemis program. NASA has contracted a customized version of the Starship vehicle to serve as a lunar lander for future Moon missions.
In addition to lunar exploration, SpaceX plans to use Starship for future interplanetary missions. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has publicly stated that the spacecraft is intended to support human travel to Mars. Each round trip to the Red Planet is projected to take approximately nine months.
Regulatory Oversight and Public Communication
The FAA is expected to launch a new investigation into Thursday’s explosion. The agency’s oversight responsibilities include ensuring public safety and assessing environmental and airspace impacts related to commercial spaceflight operations.
A spokesperson for the government of the Turks and Caicos Islands stated, “We are in communication with SpaceX and U.S. authorities and will continue to keep the public informed as more information becomes available.”
As of Friday morning, Elon Musk had not issued a public statement regarding the latest Starship malfunction.
